Attention all Law Firms - Are you Prepared for your next PSU?

Preparation for and dealing with the recommendations post a Practice Standards Unit Visit (PSU) can be a daunting task. It is important that firms understand that the PSU visit has the dual role of regulation and consultation. The visit is based on the need for law firms to comply with the regulatory requirements of the profession and the increased business management focus of these requirements.

Often firms struggle to understand, plan and implement good and sustainable business management that will satisfy the regulatory needs of a PSU visit.

Centre for Assessment & Recognition Ltd have experience in providing business management training and consultancy to law firms both at strategic and compliance levels. This experience can be delivered through a wide range of methods from a one off consultation and projects to the development of fully integrated business management planning.

One such method is The Law Society’s Lexcel Standard.  Lexcel by its very nature will help firms comply with some of the key areas of review covered by a PSU audit.

The Standard will help firms to be prepared for a visit or spot check - which are becoming more prevalent.  If a firm through Lexcel accreditation can prove that they have good practice systems in place, and if these are operating well and the process of continual review works, a notice of a PSU visit shouldn’t faze those firms.

Because Lexcel demands compliance with good practice management and good procedures and systems; a firm that is working with Lexcel should be in a position where they will also demonstrate that they also;

-          comply with relevant Solicitors Code of Conduct rules

-          demonstrate maintenance of good records and systems

Ultimately with the assistance of Centre for Assessment & Recognition Ltd, firms can become more confident before, during and post PSU visits and develop a constructive and progressive relationship with the PSU representatives and hence within the wider context the profession.
